Launched in 2001, Piaggio Beverly has revolutionised the mid-sized scooter market, introducing a vehicle with an attractive design, brilliant performance and extreme safety, not only due to its large-diameter wheels but also thanks to motorcycle-type frames and suspensions. Beverly's commercial success has always gone hand in hand with constant updates to keep it on top of the sales charts and an object of desire for the most sophisticated urban users.

Twenty years after the first generation, Piaggio Beverly has been entirely revamped, taking on an even more modern and contemporary look, but maintaining its distinctive characteristics intact, the perfect combination of a sporty, high-wheel scooter and a luxurious GT that makes it an extremely versatile vehicle. The new Piaggio Beverly is, therefore, the ideal scooter for any use, from urban commuting - where its agility and easy handling come out - all the way to suburban medium and long range touring, even riding two-up, a situation in which it demonstrates stability, power and top level on board comfort.

The new design follows automotive trends and focuses on sportiness: the front end has been entirely redesigned, whereas for the side view, the smooth and sinuous lines that had always characterised Beverly, step aside to make room for more taut and muscular lines that run toward a more upward tending and slender rear end.

Making their début on the new Piaggio Beverly are two new and powerful Euro 5 powerplants from the hpe family (High Performance Engine) - 300 and 400 cc - capable of providing 19 and 26 kW of power respectively. Ultra modern powerplants combined with an extremely effective chassis architecture, further evolved in terms of suspension, guaranteed performance, dynamic features and top-level riding pleasure.

Piaggio Beverly also evolves on the technology front, introducing the keyless system, which lets you start the vehicle keeping the remote control conveniently in your pocket.

Piaggio Beverly is available with two standard equipment packages: Beverly, with refined and elegant finishing, and Beverly S, characterised by an even sportier look.

New motorcycle-inspired look

The flagship of the Piaggio high-wheel range has undergone a profound restyling, now with differently proportioned volumes. The front end, where a redesigned leg shield stands out, is more imposing and protective, whereas for the side view, the smooth and sinuous lines that had always characterised Beverly, step aside to make room for more taut and muscular lines that run toward a more upward tending and slender rear end. These are stylistic choices that give the new Beverly a more accentuate sportiness, but without tarnishing its unmistakable elegance and personality.

The centre of the shield is dominated by a new vertical element, featuring a V-shaped opening with a three-dimensional, honeycomb grille. This is the modern re-interpretation of the characteristic Piaggio “neck tie”, yet another detail that gives it a sportier look.

The new LED front headlamp sits at the centre of the redesigned handlebar, significantly increasing visibility, all to the advantage of greater active safety. The turn indicators and the position lights are also LED. Positioned on the sides of the leg shield, they trace the edges, thereby creating a luminous “signature” that makes the new Beverly recognisable at a glance, even in the light of day.

The handlebar was the subject of substantial improvements, even from a functional point of view. At the centre “navigation bridge” there is a brand new and fully digital 5.5” LCD instrument panel, alongside which the new handlebar controls are positioned. With entirely redesigned ergonomics and adopting a motorcycle-inspired logic, these allow the rider to manage the vehicle features more conveniently intuitively and they are characterised by a glossy black finish.

At the centre of the footboard, Beverly's characteristic central tunnel is connected to the side panels under the saddle without a solution of continuity and with bold lines, giving the vehicle a dynamic yet compact look. Moving toward the rear area, the tail ends in an original extractor profile - clearly derived from the automotive world - that emerges at the centre of the LED rear light cluster. The latter is broken up by two aggressive openings which also have a three-dimensional honeycomb grille.

The brand new, motorcycle-style license plate holder, positioned on the wheel, contributes to making the new Beverly extremely slender and clean, providing a clear sensation of light weight and dynamic character.

The wheel rims are also new, with a brand new, sporty, seven split spoke design, and the seat is magnificently refined with double covering and double stitching. Characterised by the seating on two separate levels for the rider and passenger (which has always been a particular feature of this model), ergonomics have been further improved, ensuring easy reach to the ground, and an extremely high level of comfort.

The helmet compartment under the seat, featuring a courtesy light, maintains outstanding cargo space, able to hold two jet helmets. A result achieved thanks to the positioning of the fuel tank at the centre of the footboard, another one of Beverly's particular features from its birth which also provides other benefits such as the possibility of refuelling without getting off the scooter and excellent rideability features due to better centralisation of the masses.

Cargo capacity is rounded out by the practical luggage rack with its integrated passenger grab handles, the glove box incorporated in the leg shield back plate, complete with a USB port inside to charge mobile devices, and the retractable bag hook. The 400 hpe version also stands out with a windscreen that comes standard and emphasises its suburban touring personality.

Top-of-class equipment

The technological equipment on the new Piaggio Beverly can stand up to any comparison: The new instrumentation with LCD display and the digital speedometer and tachometer scale clearly visible in the centre, provides total and partial views of the odometer, air temperature, digital clock, fuel level and coolant temperature indicators, ice danger icon, lowered side stand icon, and “service” icon. It also shows a full set of travel information, including maximum speed, average speed, current fuel consumption, average fuel consumption, battery life and charge status, which can be selected using the MODE button on the right-hand control block: highest speed, average speed, instantaneous consumption, average consumption, battery range and charge level. The warning lights, on the other hand, monitor all the functions such as “injection check”, fuel reserve, oil pressure, ABS activation and immobilizer.

Also making its début on the new Beverly is the keyless system, which lets you activate the ignition without having to insert the traditional key, streamlining all the operations like starting the engine, opening the seat and the fuel door and locking the steering column, all of which can be done with the remote control conveniently in your pocket. On the leg shield back plate, the classic ignition key switch is replaced by a practical knob: to start the vehicle, simply press it (thereby activating consent for ignition, indicated by the highly visible Piaggio logo on the frame of the instrumentation turning on) and turn it to the ON position. Starting the engine is accomplished as usual with the button located on the right-hand control bock.

Last, but not least, the PIAGGIO MIA connectivity system is, of course, a must, standard on the 400 hpe version. This is the system that lets you connect your smartphone to Beverly’s on board electronics system via Bluetooth, providing exclusive features for an even more satisfying and fun riding experience.

PIAGGIO MIA and the new Piaggio App are specifically designed to connect iOS or Android mobile devices to the new Piaggio Beverly, exploiting the potential offered by the new digital instrument cluster. This content is totally new for the medium- high-wheel scooter segment, further demonstrating the excellence of the new Beverly's technological equipment.

Once you have connected your smartphone to the Piaggio Beverly - associating it with the vehicle via the Piaggio App, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play - all notifications for incoming calls and messages appear on the instrument cluster. The system also enables call management using the specific connectivity button on the right-hand control block and the use of vocal commands to make calls or play music, by activating a playlist. To fully enjoy all these features, the Piaggio Beverly offers a special dedicated Jet helmet as an accessory that integrates headphones and Bluetooth intercom.

In addition to the call and music management functions, which use the bike's digital instrument cluster, the PIAGGIO MIA multimedia platform allows you to use the dedicated App to view a further and exceptionally rich set of information about the route and the operating status of the vehicle. It also has a convenient system for saving the position when the ignition is off, which helps you find the scooter in the most crowded areas of town. The application can also indicate engine revs, instantaneous power and torque, current and average fuel consumption, battery voltage and an assessment of riding style. All the data are recorded by the App and can be consulted directly on the smartphone through summary statistics for each trip and intuitive infographics. The App also lets you use your smartphone to conveniently activate the find me and follow me functions, which respectively make the turn indicators flash and the horn blow to easily find your vehicle even in the most crowded car parks and the low beam lights.

Engines: the complete hpe family

The new Piaggio Beverly is fitted with two brand new Euro 5 powerplants from the hpe family (High Performance Engine) in the 300 and 400 cc versions. Both the engines, 4-stroke 4-valve single cylinder units, with liquid cooling and electronic injection, are the result of the Piaggio Group research and development centre’s experience, working specifically to achieve better performance and improved rideability, reducing fuel consumption and noise.

300 hpe engine

After its début on the Vespa GTS and Piaggio MP3, the 300 hpe powerplant is now also on the new Piaggio Beverly, bringing it a significant step forward in terms of performance and rideability. In fact, maximum power reaches a value of 19 kW (25.8 HP) at 8000 revs, which translates into an increase of 23% compared to the previous version with the same engine displacement, while maximum torque, equal to 26 Nm at 6250 revs, rises by 16%.

From its début, the 300 hpe has adopted a head with entirely redesigned internal components: revamped geometry and diameter of the ducts, as well as the intake and exhaust valves, which have increased in diameter by 3 mm. The use of a piston with redesigned architecture, particularly in the shape of the top, results in a highly efficient combustion chamber.

The single camshaft system with overhead valves uses rockers with roller tappets instead of flat tappets, all to the advantage of smoothness, durability and the reduction in mechanical loss. The camshaft profile adopts valve lifting with more thrust, but at the same time able to reduce the noise generated by the timing: specifically, more angle over stroke valve time guarantees greater filling of the combustion chamber, which translates into better efficiency. Consequently, the load and dimensions of the valve springs have also been upgraded.

A high pressure, multijet injector also contributes to improving combustion. A more generous intake line, equipped with a duct with optimised length, improves the torque delivered at low revs and ensures an exceptionally smooth ride at any speed. Last, but not least, the iridium ignition spark-plug ensures greater durability in the same operating conditions.

The engine is controlled by a latest-generation Magneti Marelli MIUG4 ECU. Featuring greater calculating capacity, it contributes to improving overall engine efficiency and also allows the engine to be started almost instantaneously, after just two revolutions of the crankshaft.

400 hpe engine

Accredited with maximum power of 26 kW (35.4 HP) at 7500 rpm and maximum torque of 37.7 Nm at 5500 rpm, the 400 hpe engine makes its début on the new Beverly, built on the base of the previous 350 cc unit which it replaces. The substantial difference, however, is not simply the increased capacity: although starting from an already extremely efficient engine, the Piaggio engineers focused on multiple aspects with the goal of further improving mechanical and thermodynamic performance, as well as reducing vibrations and noise.

The use of a longer rod with optimised weight, as well as a piston that has also been lightened and moulded in aluminium alloy - solutions that are not common, usually dedicated to high-level motorcycle applications - contributed to reducing the alternating inertia forces, resulting in less vibration transmitted to the vehicle. All of this translates into greater overall comfort, particularly at cruising speed - an aspect that highlights the suburban touring character of the Beverly 400 hpe.

On the 400 hpe, which maintains the exceptional characteristics of light weight and compact size as the 350 (weight and bulk remain substantially the same), an innovative system patented by Piaggio makes its début, called PCV - Positive Crankcase Ventilation: comprising two blades built into the engine crankcase, it aims to reduce pumping losses, thereby favouring an increase in power.

Engine output, in terms of both power and torque, benefits from a new, specific intake line and optimised valve lifting. A new progressive type chain tensioner, on the other hand, contributes to quieter timing operation.

Overall efficiency benefits from several changes in various areas: these include optimisation of the combustion chamber using CFD calculations, a new high pressure injector that atomises the fuel more and the use of a less viscous engine oil (5W-40).

The 400 hpe engine is recognisable at a glance thanks to a new dedicated silencer with aggressive dual pipes, a clearly motorcycle-inspired solution.

The transmission has also been revisited, with the automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) that has a new layout, developed to improve cooling of the belt, to which a larger diameter fan also contributes.

Like the 300 hpe, the 400 hpe also uses an iridium spark plug and is controlled by the powerful Magneti Marelli MIUG4 ECU.

An even more refined chassis architecture

Right from the beginning, brilliant engines and an original, extremely efficient chassis have been the primary elements contributing to the success of the most-loved high-wheeled scooter. These are bar-setting technical features that evolve even further on the new Beverly, thanks to a completely revamped suspension.

The double-cradle frame in high-strength steel tubes and pressed sheet metal is now combined on the front with a new Showa fork with 35 mm stanchions, while rear suspension is handled by a new pair of Showa double-acting helical-spring shock absorbers with adjustable spring pre-load offering 5 different positions (purposely conceived for this model) to ensure optimal absorption of road bumps while delivering a neutral response and accurate handling.

Thanks to this motorcycle-style bearing structure and the large wheels with rims in lightweight alloy (16” on the front and 14” on the rear) the new Beverly ensures motorbike-like riding comfort and road-holding, maintaining great agility and handling. The version fitted with the 400 hpe engine also adopts wider tyres (120/70 instead of 110/70 on the front and 150/70 instead of 140/70 on the rear), which ensure better stability at sustained speeds.

Active safety is handled by ASR traction control and the powerful braking system that comes standard with 2-channel ABS antilock braking. At the front, the large 300 mm semi-floating disc (the biggest in this category) with a double-piston floating calliper and 12.7 mm master cylinder - features that translated into powerful and modular braking. On the back, a 240 mm disc.

Versions and colours

Two distinctive spirits coexist in the new Piaggio Beverly: on one hand, the more elegant and refined one, represented by Beverly, and on the other, that grittier and sportier one, that is manifested in the Beverly S.

Piaggio Beverly

Piaggio Beverly comes in a range of elegant and glossy colours, such as Bianco Luna and the two brand new metallic Blu Oxygen and Grigio Cloud colour schemes These colour schemes are combined with finishings in light, warm and inviting metallic shades, the dark brown colour of the seat with tone on tone double stitching and light grey wheel rims.

Piaggio Beverly S

Piaggio Beverly S stands out, first and foremost, because of its sporty matt finishes in graphite grey. There are three dedicated colour schemes: Argento Cometa and Nero Tempesta (matt) and the original, futuristic glossy Arancio Sunset colour. The S version features a new black seat in two materials with contrasting double stitching and dark grey wheel rims.
